Google Drive App For Macbook Pro
When Google introduced us to the Google Backup and Sync app, we knew that days were numbered for the Google Drive app. The arrival of this new app meant that there were two apps doing the same thing, and that wouldn’t be the case for long. The days were numbered – and the date has arrived today. Google has announced that the Google Drive app for Windows and Mac users will shut down on 12th March, 2018.
Google Backup and Sync and Drive File Streamer to Take Over
While the aforementioned Google Backup and Sync app is for the regular consumers, Google had announced Drive File Streamer in March for enterprise users. This app is going to roll out for Windows and Mac users starting the 26th of September. For those wondering what the difference between the two is, we hope this image helps you better:

Moreover, the concept of Google Backup and Sync is to basically merge the Google Drive app and the Google Photos app in a better offering. The Google Drive File Streamer app is meant for business users. The streamer app allows the users to save space on their hard drive while providing access to all Google Drive files. The app ‘shutting down’ does not mean that the Google Drive service will stop functioning. The Google Drive can still be accessed via the website and the Android and iOS app as well as these new software options.
Jun 24, 2019 There’s an official Google Drive app for Mac too — an upgraded 2017 version of which is called Backup & Sync and is sometimes referred to as the new Google Drive. Google Drive Backup and Sync download is free and you can expect to install it and have it running in no time and little effort. Upgrade Google Drive with Setapp. This is the third G-Technology G-Drive that I have purchased over the past several years. The first two drives have been very reliable and very fast. My recent purchase of the 6TB G-Tech Thunderbolt G-Drive appears to be no exception. I am using it as my Time Machine backup drive and it is as fast or faster than any drive I have previously used. Google Backup and Sync is all set to take over from the Google Drive app.
Starting next month, users of the Google Drive app for Windows and Mac will begin to get a notification that will let them know that the app will be ‘going away’ in March 2018. The users would then be advised to move on to the Backup and Sync app. Moreover, starting the 11th of December, Google will end support for the Google Drive app for Windows and Mac users. The app will finally be deemed ‘shut down’ starting the 12th of March, 2018.

G Drive App For Mac Desktop
I have an old Mac Pro (late 2006) running Lion with an external G-Drive purchased in 2010. The G-Drive contains both the Time Machine backups from my Mac Pro + 2 other volumes, one containing my photo library and another containing my iTunes media library.

I have just purchased a 2016 MacBook Pro running Sierra and would like to transfer the contents of the photo library (not to mention some files from my Time Machine backups) from my G-Drive to the new computer. I purchased a USB-C to Mini-B cable to connect my G-Drive to the MacBook Pro but the hard disk doesn't appear when I plug it in. I've tried restarting both the computer and the external hard drive. I also tried using the Migration Assistant but the hard drive did not show up that way either.
Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks very much.
